Reconstructed vessels catalog

This is a small fragment of what may be a cylinder stand, based on its similarity in paste, red slip, and fine dentate stamping to ECA-V-073; although these two do not match, it is likely that they come from the same vessel. Only a small portion of what was clearly a complex design are evident. The fragment of main motif (TFG1399), which involves both dentate stamping and cutouts, is bordered to the right by a vertical row of motif FOH104 (stamped lozenges), deep groove (GZ1IV), and vertical zone marker RZ4D-3RV-2.

This is a body sherd from a globular jar with just the trace of a dentate stamped design on the upper body.

These sherds, which do not all match but clearly come from the same pedestal base, have unfortunately been eroded, obscuring somewhat the complex design. The main design involved circular, lime-filled carved grooves mixed with curvilinear zone marking and fine dentate stamping. The motif (recorded as TFG3754 and TFG3755) is similar in many respects to that seen on vessel ECA-V-015, and might also have represented the long-beaked bird. Below the main motif there are two rows of zone marker RZ4D-4-2, and below this the base of the pedestal is decorated with motif PK51, alternating triangular cutouts with intervening stamped lines.

This very slightly everted rim appears to come from a large jar with restricted orifice. The lip is undecorated. On the exterior, the decoration begins with zone marker RZ4D-3R-2, below which the main motif (PK86) consists of an appliqué “appliqué “starfish” with five arms or spokes, surrounded by zone marking and stamped circles. Whether this is truly a zoomorphic design is uncertain, but it is difficult to imagine what else may be represented.

This red slipped bowl has motif GS437 (sets of four stamped lines each) on the lip. On the exterior, the decoration begins immediately below the lip with motif GS463, consisting of sets of sloping, stamped lines. Zone marker RZ4D-4R-2 sets this off from the main motif, PK175, a variant of the zigzag design. The dentate stamping is quite finely executed.

This is the rim and neck of a small, plain ware jar.

This is a plainware jar, quite low fired, with an everted rim.

This is the neck and rim (absent the lip) of a large plainware jar.

This is the rim and neck of a large, quite thin-walled jar (and may be the upper part of the same carinated jar as ECA-V-207). The rim is strongly everted, and nearly horizontal inner rim edge is decorated with sets of slanting incised lines (motif PK280). On the exterior, the motif (PK239) is a cross-hatched grid of incised lines, executed without any particular concern for precision in the spacing between lines. This was merged with ECA-V-201.

This is the carinated body portion of a carinated bowl, lacking the rim and base. The coarse dentate-stamped decoration is quite open and simple, with only a fragment of the upper motif (TFG1901) present. Zone marker RZ4D-3 runs horizontally about 0.9 cm above the carination, and the space between the zone marker and the carination is filled in with motif M77-1, in a very open pattern.
