DOA No: 33/200-5:2 A Sierra Red bowl with incurved sides, an everted rim, rounded lip, and a flat base. The exterior and interior are slipped with a color that varies between a reddish yellow (5YR 5/6) and red (10R 5/8). Fire clouding on the exterior has produced patches of a very dark gray (2.5YR 3/0) or black (2.5Y 2/0). The diameter of the base is 14 cm.
A slightly outcurved vessel with an everted rim and 14 chevrons inscribed around the body below the rim. A lower register contains design elements in the shape of an inverted "U" that measure 9 cm in height and have widths of 3-4 cm. Fire clouding has blackened the rim and marred the finish of the red slip. The basal diameter is 13 cm.
Vessel: Laguna Verde Incised: Laguna Verde Variety flared vessel with everted rim and outcurved sides. Part of a cache.
This large bowl has outcurving walls, an everted rim, and a 40-cm diameter base. The vessel is slipped in red (10R 4/8) on both the interior and exterior. The paste has a core of yellowish red (5YR 5/8) and very dark gray (2.5YR 3/0). Wall thickness is 0.9 cm.
A cylinder that has slightly incurving walls and an everted rim with a direct rounded lip. Vertical gadroons decorate the body but terminate 4 cm below the rim. Each gadroon is 3 cm in width. Two circumferential lines form a 2-cm wide band beneath the rim. Within this band, incised elements create an open chevron design. The vessel's slip, while damaged, appears as an orange-red (2.5YR 5/8) on the exterior and interior. Fire clouding is present on the exterior. The external lip exhibits a brown (5YR 4/6) coloration and the general paste color is yellow (10YR 7/6). The paste has large inclusions and a strong brown (7.5YR 4/8) core. The base diameter is 15 cm.
This dish has a slightly rounded base (9 cm diameter), flaring sides, and a flared rim with a slightly squared lip.
This dish has friable outcurving walls, a direct rim, and a rounded lip. It is slipped on the interior with a yellowish red (5YR 5/8). The paste has a blackened core (10YR 4/1) and an outer color of yellow (10YR 7/6). The diameter of the base is 9 cm with a thickness of 0.5 cm.
A bowl with outcurved sides, a flaring everted rim, and a rounded lip. The diameter of the base is 28 cm and the height to the rim is 7.5 cm. Wall thickness varies between 0.8 and 1 cm.
Vessel: Society Hall Red: Society Hall Variety outcurving bowl with outflaring, everted rim.
An eroded rounded bowl with a direct rim and rounded lip. The flat base has a diameter of 15 cm. Paste and slip color fall within the characteristic attributes of Sierra Red. The gadroon decoration is subtle, not protruding to the extent of others within this type. Each groove is 1 cm in width. The vessel walls are 0.5-0.7 cm thick.
A spouted jar with a vertical neck, exteriorly thickened rim, and rounded lip. The height of the neck measures 1.8 cm, and the spout is 4.9 cm tall with an aperture of 1.3 cm. Opposite the spout is a poorly preserved applique. The paste and color characteristics of the vessel place it within the Sierra Red type.
Only partially complete, this bowl has outcurving sides, an everted rim, and a direct rounded lip. It has been slipped on the exterior and interior, and fire clouding is present. Wall thickness is 1 cm and the base diameter is 20 cm. It was found over the chest of the individual.
Bowl with flaring sides, an incurved base, horizontally everted rim, and rounded lip. The rim flares 7 cm from the base and has a beveled aspect. The red coloration of the vessel places it within the Sierra Red type, and there is fire clouding on the surface. The wall thickness is 1 cm. The vessel has a base diameter of 21.5 cm. It was found inverted over the skull of the individual.
A Sierra Red spouted jar with a vertical neck, exteriorly thickened rim, and rounded lip. The vessel is too fragmentary to determine the height or characteristics of the spout. The flat base has a diameter of 6.5 cm. This vessel was nested within another (V# 067) to form part of a cache.
A bowl with flared sides and a horizontally everted rim. The slip is highly eroded. Wall thickness measures 0.5-0.7 cm. Within the cache, a small jar (V# 066) had been placed inside of this bowl.
A bowl with outcurved sides, an everted rim, and a direct ovoid lip. The rim is 5.5 cm in width. Vessel paste is reddish yellow (5YR 6/8) and the slip is red (2.5YR 5/8). The base diameter is 35 cm.
This cylinder with outcurved sides and an exteriorly thickened rim and rounded lip is extremely eroded, and reveals a light reddish brown (2.5YR 6/4) paste under the surface. The overall slip color is dark red (2.5YR 4/8), but some fire clouding occurs and can range between a light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4), brownish yellow (10YR 6/6), and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6). The diameter of the base is 10 cm. Two pieces of chert were found inside the vessel.
Vessel: Sierra Red: Sierra Variety vessel with outcurved sides and an exteriorly thickened rim. Part of a cache.
This bowl has almost vertical sides. The color and paste are within the characteristic attributes of the Sierra Red type, Gadrooned variety. The decoration consists of shallow grooves, measuring 1 cm in width, carved into the exterior. The grooves are not as deep as those of other Sierra Red types, possibly due to erosional processes. The diameter of the incurved base is 23.5 cm. The bowl was deposited as a cache within the subfloor of Zone 16 and contained one piece of chert debitage.
This bowl has incurved walls, a direct rim, and a slightly squared lip. The vessel is decorated with four circumferential grooves on the upper part of the body. Each groove is of variable width (0.5-0.75 cm) and the uppermost one helps to form the rim. Two strap handles attach to the rim and measure 3 cm in length. The slip is eroded and found only on the exterior, as is fire clouding. The base is rounded and curves up to a maximum vessel diameter of 22 cm. The walls vary in thickness between 0.3-0.7 cm. The vessel was found in an inverted position.
A Sierra Red bowl with outcurved sides, medial flange, everted rim, and rounded lip. The base is rounded. One of two identical vessels, it was the upper half of a lip-to-lip cache with V# 074.
The second of two identical vessels, this Sierra Red bowl is less complete than V# 073. It has outcurved sides, medial flange, everted rim, and rounded lip. It was placed as the lower half offering in a lip-to-lip cache.
A bowl with flaring sides, a direct rim, and round lip. The basal diameter is 16 cm. The vessel was extremely eroded, so the red (2.5YR 5/8) color of the paste predominates. A very pale brown (10YR 7/3) color also occurs. The vessel was subject to carbonate accumulations. The thickness of the walls varies from 0.7 to 0.9 cm within which there is a 0.5 cm wide core of grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2). The bowl was the upright bottom vessel within the upper set of two lip-to-lip cache deposits.
An eroded Society Hall bowl with outcurving sides. The base diameter is 14 cm. This was the upright bottom vessel of the lower lip-to-lip cache deposit.
Cache deposit showing upper, inverted vessel of lower lip-to-lip cache, Construction Phase 3.
A Sierra Red bowl with outcurved sides, rounded base, and a direct rim with rounded lip. The interior of the vessel was burned. The slip has been burned to black, but is eroded and only small areas are apparent. The paste is a yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) color. The bowl was one of two found inverted over the head of a (possibly) male adult.
Slightly eroded, this bowl has a straight direct rim and a square lip. The basal diameter is 18 cm and the thickness of the wall ranges from 0.9 to 1.2 cm. Red (2.5YR 5/8) slip has been applied to the interior and exterior, while the paste is a pale brown (10YR 6/3). The vessel was one of two found inverted over the skull.
A very fragmentary Sierra Red jar with a slightly rounded base (18 cm diameter) and no rim sherds. The slip is a reddish yellow (5YR 7/8), as is the coarse paste (5YR 6/8) that contains large inclusions and a blackened core. The vessel wall is 1.2 cm thick. The jar was apparently purposefully broken during deposition to form a "shield" over the chest of the individual. This vessel was an heirloom Late KÕatabcheÕkÕax piece found in a Terminal KÕatabcheÕkÕax context.
A flat-bottomed bowl (24 cm diameter) with outcurved walls and an everted, direct rim. Fire clouding is present on both the interior and exterior of the lip of the vessel. The vessel is also slipped on the interior and exterior. The paste is a reddish brown (2.5YR 4/8). Vessel thickness is 0.7 cm. This bowl was placed in the lap of a seated young adult male.
