Variables in Data Record A2

Line No. Line number reflecting original order of data entry, probably irrelevant for most investigators.

Sherd No. Arbitrary sherd number.

Provenience. Full minimal provenience (see Chapter 2 for comments on abbreviations).

Site. This and the following are individual elements of the provenience, to allow sorting by mound, unit, and so forth.

Mound/Area.

Unit.

Level/Lot.

Feature#.

Phase. The most likely phase for materials in this unit based on all available evidence.

Phase (sorts to chronological order). Here, the phases will sort in chronological order because of appended numbers

Ceramic Analysis Level. A through E; see Table 2.2.

Refuse Sample ID. Initial Refuse Sample identifier (see Chapter 2).

Type-Class. See Chapter 8 for definition and description.

Type. See Chapter 8 for definition and description. Includes uncertain identifications of various kinds.

Type-Simplified. Simplified types with uncertainties smoothed out; probably the most appropriate for analysis.

Vessel Form. Form code from Figure 8.1.

Vessel Height. Original vessel height, where known (cm).

Max Vessel Diameter (B5,B9,T1,T2 only). Original maximum vessel diameter, where measurable with diameter chart for the listed forms only (cm).

Rim Diameter. Measured with diameter chart.

Percent of Original Rim. Estimated with diameter chart for most sherds, even when diameter itself uncertain.

Wall Thickness. Measured with calipers (cm)

Form-Basic. Somewhat simplified version of the vessel form codes (B1a and B1b become simply “B1,” and so forth)

Form-General. Further lumping of form codes to more generalized vessel forms.

Form-Functional classification. Mostly a descriptive version of Form-General.

Surface Decoration Scheme. General notes on surface decoration.

Surface Treatment-Exterior. Notes on exterior surface treatment.

Surface Treatment-Interior. Notes on interior surface treatment.

Stamping. Stamping or gouging technique (see Figure 8.8).

Incisions Around Rim. Number of grooves around rim.

Decoration Ext. Notes on exterior decoration.

Decoration Int. Notes on interior decoration.

Decoration Rim. Notes on decoration in vicinity of rim.

Tecomate Shape. Globular or subglobular.

Tecomate Wall Angle. See Lesure (1998a: Figures 2 and 5a).
